David Crook, Managing Director

Having managed my own business for many years, I understand the ups and downs of business ownership all too well. It’s vital to have good people in your corner, and that’s where I’ll be as your Commercial Broker. I’ve got a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce, 8 years’ experience in Finance and solid relationships with key commercial lenders. Over time, I’ve built a network of financial and business specialists with whom I work regularly, to ensure I can provide or connect my clients with holistic financial support.

Something that sets me apart is that I particularly enjoy working on intricate commercial finance applications that aren’t so straight forward. These usually require some out-of-the-box thinking and keen negotiations with lenders on your behalf; I relish the challenge!

Outside of work, I’m a massive foodie, a musician and I love to travel. I look forward to getting to know you and your business.

Julia Paton, Commercial Broker

After more than a decade spent in marketing, the opportunity to make a career change and move into the world of commercial finance landed on my doorstep. Believe it or not, numbers are my happy place. I’m an avid investor myself and hold a Bachelor of Commerce, so I leapt at the chance. I also believe that my marketing background translates well as a business finance broker – my clients’ needs are always at the forefront of my mind. Given the economic challenges of recent years, I love helping clients from all industries rebound and achieve their financial goals.

I want my clients to know that I am always in their corner. A lot of business owners have had bad lending experiences and view it as a complicated process with a low rate of success. At Nero Financial, we make everything as seamless as possible. No matter their requirements, I’ll push as hard as I can on my client’s behalf to get them where they need to be.

I’m a very active person with a keen interest in road cycling, Pilates, skiing and more recently Muay Thai. I don’t shy away from getting my hands dirty and have a couple of DIY renos under my belt now, with a plan to get on the tools more in the future!


Chanel Cicchiello, Client Support Manager

As Nero Financial’s Client Support Manager, it’s my job to make sure everything runs smoothly for both our business finance brokers and our clients. To ensure our financial solutions are as efficient and effective as possible, I often have a packed-out day that consists of client liaison, document administration and everything in-between. I believe that having a strong connection with all aspects of the business allows me to better serve those that contact us, acting as not only a professional contact, but also a trusted confidant.

I landed in commercial finance with vast experience in a broad variety of fields including sales, customer experience and retail. Demonstrating a dynamic and enthusiastic approach meant that I was able to build robust relationships with those I work with while also pushing myself in a professional capacity. When clients engage with Nero, I aim to provide a bespoke feel to our place in the finance industry, allowing for open and integral conversations that occur in an organic way. Creating long lasting, reciprocal relationships is what makes my role so rewarding and the fact that every day presents something new is a bonus.

My growth also extends to my personal life, as outside of my work I love to surround myself with new people and environments, always eager to explore something new. Having travelled around Europe alone, a sense of adventure is something I’ve always maintained and will continue to foster – making sure I add to the expanding list of countries I’ve visited.

Rory McGrath, Commercial Broker

Rory McGrath is a dedicated business finance broker with over eight years experience in the industry. He started as a Commercial Broker in New Zealand with a successful business of his own, before making the massive decision to start fresh in Australia. Competitive, quick on his feet and well-known amongst our lender partners, Rory is well-positioned to negotiate for his clients. He not only enjoys helping his clients achieve their business goals, but taking all the stress and worry away when it comes to securing the necessary commercial finance!

When he’s not excelling in his career, Rory is a fitness fanatic and loves to chase new adventures.


James Huntley, Commercial Broker

James Huntley is a passionate business finance broker with over 8 years' experience and a Diploma of Finance & Mortgage Broking. He fell into the industry while playing professional rugby league - and he hasn't looked back! James says settling a deal for a client gives him the same 'buzz' of excitement that he experienced on the footy field. He loves that every commercial finance scenario is different, allowing him to get creative, negotiate with his lender partners and ultimately, tailor a unique solution for each client.

As part of the Gold Coast team, James is well known for his competitive nature, work ethic and good humour. In his spare time he is race-horse obsessed and a massive fan of the rodeo!


Daran Thomson, Commercial Broker

Daran Thomson brings almost 20 years of experience in business growth and development to the Nero Financial team. Having worked across a plethora of industries including tourism, professional sport, retail, government and more - he finally found his ‘home’ in commercial finance. Paring his natural talent and wealth of knowledge in this space with his ability to relate to people of all backgrounds, Daran is passionate about supporting business owners to realise their financial ambition.

When he’s not in his role as a business finance broker, chatting to a client on the phone, you can find Daran jamming with his band, training at the gym or hanging out with friends.


Emma Goldberg, Client Support Manager

Emma Goldberg is a client service specialist and is the force behind our Gold Coast commercial finance team. Friendly, approachable and down to earth, Emma ensures the fast and efficient delivery of a high-quality lending service to our clients - every time. Her favourite aspect of the job is getting to know her clients and their business, because every story is different! She is action-orientated, organised and proactive - a perfect combination for this fast-paced role.

Outside the office, you'll find Emma chasing the sun, relaxing at the beach or socialising with friends.


Chris Cook, Commercial Broker

Chris Cook entered the commercial finance industry after more than a decade in small business management across the automotive and construction industries. In short, he understands business and the vital importance of good cash flow. It’s this experience, underpinned by strong relationships with key lenders, that sets him apart from his peers. Chris is hard-working, reliable and trustworthy. Eager to get to know his client’s business ambitions, he proactively works with his clients to ensure they are ready when opportunity knocks. An avid football player, he loves the fast pace and competitive nature of life as a business finance broker. Outside of work (and the footy field), Chris loves to spend time with his family in the great outdoors.

To be eligible for business finance, it helps if you meet the following two criteria; (1) You’ve been trading for more than 3 months and (2) You own a property. If you don’t quite meet these criteria, your Nero Broker will roll up their sleeves. Where there is a will, there is (usually) a way. Put us to work!

Your business is unique, so the amount you can borrow will depend on a number of factors. Your designated broker will work closely with you to calculate your borrowing capacity based on turnover, profitability and any assets you could borrow against, such as the properties you partially or fully own.

As mentioned – your business is unique, so the loan products and corresponding interest rates available to you will depend on a number of factors. Ultimately, interest rates are calculated based on risk. Timing (i.e. how quickly you need funding) can also play a factor. Put simply, the lower the risk for the lender, the lower the rate.
